(インディーズ作品に出演するのはお好きですか？)
J.K.シモンズ: とてもね。ここ数年何作か関わってきて、この数ヶ月で多くが公開されるよ。
大作にも出演したし、ターミネター ジェネシスにも脇役だが出演している。
良い人々と良いものを作るというのはとても楽しく、それには作品の大きさなどは関係ないんだ。
インディーズ作品の良さはね、『セッション』は典型的な例にもなるけど、その場にいる人々はみんなしかるべき目的を持っているという事なんだ。
つまりね、誰一人としてお給料のためにそこにはいないんだ。だってこういう作品のお給料は大きな額ではないからね。みんなであるクリエイティブなビジョンを共有している。それがインディーズ作品に出演する本当の楽しさだね。
MM: Do you enjoy working on indie projects?
JS: Absolutely. I did several indies in the last couple years, I have a bunch of them coming out in the next few months. But then I did a big blockbuster, a small part in Terminator: Genisys. What I really enjoy is doing good stuff with good people, and you can do that on any level.
The thing about indies like this, and certainly Whiplash is a classic example, is that you know everybody’s there for the right reasons. Nobody’s there just for the paycheck, because the paycheck’s not that big. There’s a shared creative vision. That’s really the fun of doing indies.

セッションで一番好きなシーンはフレッチャーがクラブでピアノを弾いてるシーン。彼のピアノを聴いた時のアンドリューの表情がまた素晴らしい。
少し寂しげなこの曲はまるでフレッチャーの叶わぬ願いが表れているようにも感じられます。
指の動きも美しいし、JK自身が弾いているように見えるけど、実際は？と気になり、調べてみるとわかったのは
彼は大学時代、音楽を専攻し、歌、指揮、作曲を学んでいたので、一通りオーケストラのどんな楽器でも弾ける。『オーボエやチェロでも”キラキラ星”なら弾ける』
ということ、
『自分が出演する映画で弾く位なら弾ける』という彼の言葉。
もう一つのインタビューでは『音楽家にしたら簡単な曲だと言われるだろうけど、あの曲を弾けるように何時間も練習したよ』、という発言でした。
ますます素敵です。
My favourite scene in the movie “Whiplash” is the scene where Andrew finds Fletcher playing the piano in the club.
That song was absolutely beautiful and touching.
Then I wondered if JK can really play the piano.
I was happy to find some article that said he could.
JS: When I was studying music in college, I had to study every instrument as a composer or composition student. I studied every instrument in the orchestra a little bit. I can basically play “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” on an oboe or a cello.
